To ensure your health, only use medicine with a prescription from your doctor. Never buy medicine outside the legal supply chain. Medicine bought outside the legal supply chain – e.g. non-authorised internet sites – could be counterfeit.

Counterfeit include products:

  • without active ingredients,
  • with incorrect quantities of active ingredients,
  • with wrong ingredients,
  • with correct quantities of active ingredients but with fake packaging,
  • with high levels of impurities and contaminants, or
  • that are illegal copies of an original product.

Counterfeit drugs can be found worldwide, the problem is increasing and more frequent in developing countries.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that while the incidence of counterfeit drugs is less than 1% in developed countries, a much higher percentage of the medicines in some developing countries may be counterfeit. (See World Health Organization, “Medicines: counterfeit medicines,” Fact sheet No 275 (Jan. 2010).

For example, an anticancer product may not benefit the patient because it contains none or too little of the active ingredient.

Opposite, the product may contain too much active ingredient or other potentially dangerous contaminants, which could also be harmful.

Furthermore, you should be careful when examining your medicine paying attention to:

  • traces of altered or unsealed packages or containers
  • changes in the packaging of the product
  • differences in the physical appearance of the product (e.g. colour, shape or taste)

If you suspect that a Novo Nordisk product has been counterfeited, you should immediately report it to your pharmacy, health care provider or directly to Novo Nordisk as described above. Please remember to save the product so it can be tested.
